Paterson Public Schools
Located approximately fifteen miles west of New York City, where the Passaic River cascades over the Great Falls, Paterson is the third largest city in New Jersey. The school system currently has 60 locations with over 6,000 employees.
Challenge
As a long-time Avaya customer, Paterson School District looked to upgrade its communications systems with the understanding that in order to future-proof its network for state-of-the-art applications, a migration to IP telephony was imminent. With a serious district-wide initiative to improve communication between teachers, parents and administrators, the new system had to support the existing Avaya Wireless Telephone usage. With over 800 Avaya Wireless Telephones and 7,000 Avaya Digital telephones, replacing the devices was not an option due to budget constraints.
Solution
A complete upgrade from Avaya DEFINITY® Communication Servers to Avaya Communication Manager software running on multiple Avaya S8710s and S8700 Media Servers with 55 Avaya Media Gateways was implemented. Avaya Modular Messaging with Message Store was also selected to replace Avaya INTUITY™ AUDIX® Voice Messaging. With over 5,000 active mailboxes, teachers, administrators and IT staff can access their messages from anywhere through voice or e mail. Working with Avaya Global Services and a Platinum Avaya BusinessPartner the District was provided with a team of consultative “listeners” who planned and executed the implementation while integrating the districts specialized requests.

• Increased mobility. Use of Avaya Wireless Telephones provides communication throughout the campus including cafeterias, hallways, classrooms, parking lots, busing stations and athletic fields. Staff members such as IT, guidance counselors, superintendents and principals can be reached anytime, anywhere over a large geographic area. This mobility makes the users more accessible and responsive to each other and parents.
• Increase collaboration. Collaboration with audio and video conferencing allows for multiple team members to discuss critical issues in real time. The solution results in a more productive work environment since calls/video conferencing doesn’t require travel throughout the city to attend meetings in person.
