Mitel Powers Sun Unified Communications Solution

Mitel has just announced the availability of the Mitel Communications Suite (MCS), which is a pre-integrated unified communications (UC) solution based on Mitel’s flagship 3300 IP Communications Platform software and Sun Microsystem’s X4150 SunFire servers.

This solution preserves all the features and functionality of a traditional Mitel 3300 ICP deployment, while enabling organizations to roll out voice-based solutions on a Sun data infrastructure.
 
“Voice is increasingly being moved into the data center where it is controlled in the same manner as other business applications for improved manageability,” said Stephen Beamish, vice president of Business Development and Strategic Alliances, Mitel. “What we are enabling with the Mitel Communications Suite is the ability to bring together mission critical voice and unified communications applications on Sun servers in the data center.”
 
Among the benefits touted by Mitel, the new offering is designed to simplify system installation and management, improve business processes, and reduce operating costs by consolidating low-power consumption telephony and server hardware platforms for IT and unified communications applications.
 
So you see, it’s green as well as practical.
 
Mitel will also add its Mitel Application Suite (MAS) solutions to the SunFire X4150 so end users can take advantage of applications such as Mitel NuPoint Unified Messaging, Mitel Live Business Gateway (News - Alert), Mitel Teleworker, Mitel Mobile Extension, Mitel Audio & Web Conferencing all on a single server.
 
According to the announcement, other Mitel features that are now native to the Sun-based solution include:
 
Linux call control processing software base
Support of up to 5,000 telephones per server
SIP Application Integration for unified messaging, conferencing, and Microsoft (News - Alert) Office Communications Server 2007
Single software stream for deployments from 10 users up to 65,000 users in a clustered configuration
HTML and XML support for business process integration
SIP Trunking capability with full interoperability with major vendors
Full featured co-resident voice applications for messaging, collaboration, and mobility.
 
This announcement builds on the existing relationship between Mitel and Sun. In June 2007, the two firms announced a global OEM agreement designed to drive converged voice and data applications in multi-tenant environments. At the time, Sun and Mitel also announced the planned integration of the Sun Ray IP Phone Bundle, which is designed to allow for a single hot desk sign-on for both the Sun Ray ultra-thin client terminal and the Mitel IP phone.
 
The new Mitel Communications Suite will be available in the second quarter (Q208) with pricing starting at $9,000.
