Doha, Qatar – The ASPIRE Academy for Sports Excellence is the first sporting academy of its kind in the Middle East. The Academy’s vision is to mould the best young sporting talent from the region into world-class athletes and future role models. To accomplish this, ASPIRE offers the highest standards in sport and educational facilities to its hand-picked students, and supports these facilities with the best, most cutting-edge technology infrastructure available. The ASPIRE campus features lecture halls, scientific laboratories, a library, amphitheater, boarding school, and medical facilities, as well as numerous recreational facilities. However the most notable feature at the Academy, which began operations in September 2004, is the gymnasium complex, which is the largest dome-covered sports stadium in the world to date.
Technology Integral to Sports Training
Key to ASPIRE’s goals for sporting success is the use of technology to improve training and performance. ASPIRE envisions an integrated sports education environment that links different elements of the training program for a holistic approach to sports technology. ASPIRE aims to connect their student database to a broad range of other systems, such as training and medical equipment, to make the information accessible from anywhere on campus. Staff will be able to capture an athlete’s training sessions and send the information to the central database; then analyze the data and create better training programs to improve performance.
“Technology has become an integral part of sport. There is so much science involved to help athletes to reach the next level of performance, but elsewhere we only see bits and pieces of technology deployed without being connected together,” explained Soubih Abdulkarim, IT Manager of ASPIRE. “What we are trying to do is to integrate all of the various technologies into one system. We aim to provide the latest technology tools to support our staff, and to connect them together with a level of integration that doesn’t exist anywhere else.”
The Challenge: Multi Platform Integration
The key to the high-tech environment envisioned by ASPIRE is a robust, flexible communication infrastructure. The Academy follows a best of breed approach, so interoperability with other vendors is very important. For its voice and data requirements, ASPIRE decided upon IP telephony because it facilitates network flexibility, extended applications, business continuity, increased productivity and cost savings. ASPIRE chose Avaya following an assessment of several vendors, since in addition to providing solutions that supported these features and benefits, the company is committed to providing customers with investment and the highest levels of reliability.
“Based on strict adherence to industry standards and the fact that the Avaya solutions are already Session Initiation Protocol (SIP) compliant were deciding factors for us. We also discovered that Avaya has been tested and received good reviews in the market, and has also achieved strong IP Telephony Contact Centers Mobility Services
interoperability success on multi-vendor platforms. We are early adopters of new technology and are currently testing wireless handsets, PDA1s and GSM2 phones with the Avaya access points, and have found that all of the solutions seem to work together very well – seamlessly connecting across the network with no problem at all.”
At the centre of ASPIRE’s IP telephony solution is Avaya Communication Manager software running on an Avaya S8700 Media Server. This enterprise size telephony solution uses the latest industry standard processors and operating system for easier integration with existing networks. Unified System Management Tools ensure that a highly stable service is available for users. An added benefit is that these solutions also have an almost limitless capacity to grow with ASPIRE’s future requirements.
